The Reality of Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM)
In many parts of the world, particularly in Nigeria, the struggle isn’t just for a better life—it’s for life itself. Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) is a life-threatening condition that affects over 10 million children globally. It is a silent emergency where the body begins to consume its own tissues to survive. Half of all child deaths worldwide are caused by malnutrition.
At the Godrick Foundation, our global purpose is to be a vehicle for delivering life-saving humanitarian aid. We don’t just see numbers; we see children who deserve the chance to grow, play, and learn.
Why Hunger is a Global Health Issue
Hunger and health are inseparable. Chronic hunger causes a massive strain on healthcare systems. It increases hospitalizations and makes it impossible for the body to fight off simple diseases. In conflict zones, where infrastructure is destroyed, the situation becomes even more dire. Approximately 65% of the world’s most hungry people live in these areas.
Our mission includes “Emergency Relief”—getting food and medicine to these victims of disaster and conflict immediately. But we also look at the long-term. Global health equity means ensuring that a child in Nigeria has the same access to quality healthcare as a child in a developed nation.
From Dependency to Self-Sufficiency
While emergency aid saves lives today, sustainable agriculture builds lives for tomorrow. The Godrick Foundation aims to move communities from a state of dependency to self-sufficiency. By supporting local agricultural systems and strengthening community resilience, we help ensure that these regions can withstand future shocks—whether they be economic, environmental, or social.
The Gendered Impact of Hunger
It is a tragic fact that women and girls are disproportionately affected by global resource crises. When food is scarce, girls are often the first to be taken out of school. Our programs prioritize ensuring that these vulnerable populations are not left behind. By providing resources and health initiatives specifically for children and mothers, we are protecting the future of the entire community.
